Parents and Students,
On Friday, September 7th, 2012 Kinard and Preston students will be guests at Fossil Ridge High School and participate in a Rachel’s Story Assembly. The students will be walking from their perspective schools, and the assembly runs from 1:00-1:50 p.m. The Fossil students will participate in their assembly in the morning. The afternoon assembly is for Kinard and Preston 6th, 7th and 8th grade students only.
Each school will have an alternative class schedule on September 7th, and all students will need a permission slip to attend the assembly. Due to the proximity of Fossil, both schools will have their students walk to the school, and event coordinators are working with their School Resource Officer to ensure a safe traffic route. In addition, the school nurses from both Kinard and Preston will be in attendance with emergency medications. If there is any reason your student cannot walk to Fossil, please contact Angel Herrick at Kinard and Amy Schmer at Preston to arrange for alternative transportation.
The Rachel’s Story assembly introduces middle school students to Rachel Scott and her challenge to deliberately reach out to others with kindness. Rachel Scott was part of the Columbine incident, and her story is told through the eyes of her family, specifically her nephew Noah, brother Mike and sister Bethanee. Rachel’s Story shows the profound positive impact students can have on those around them by simply paying attention to the little things they do and say every day. Rachel’s Story encourages participants to consider their own behavior against the following five challenges: dream big and believe in yourself, be kind to others, practice positive gossip, show appreciation and be the answer. The outcome for students is that they are empowered with the knowledge that they can and do make a difference, that they can be the answer (http://www.rachelschallenge.org/big-picture/programs/middle-school/story-middle/).
We are excited for the opportunity to bring both schools together and for the positive message for our students. If you have any questions, please contact Angel Herrick at Kinard (angelh@psdschools.org) or Amy Schmer at Preston (aschmer@psdschools.org).
Best regards,
Kinard and Preston Staff
